I saw Dedication earlier today, reminded by my friend that it was a great film. It was pretty great, but what stuck out from my mind was Mandy Moore having yet another role that had a fondness and great interest in outer space. I found myself snickering during those scenes of star-gazing because I couldn't help thinking of her having another role with looking through the telescope the guy who is hopelessly in love with her bought (or made in the case of A Walk to Remember). So enough with my spoilers, for those who haven't watched it and want to see it.
The chemistry between the two characters (author and illustrator) lives up to the well-known cliche, but possibly true(?), phrase: "Opposites attract." You've got the short-tempered, pretty psychotic, fucked up guy. Perfect for a children's book author, yes? Then comes along the pretty illustrator, Lucy, who's come in as the replacement for Henry's(the author) late partner and father-figure, illustrator to Henry's children story of "Marty the Beaver." At first, Henry refuses to work with her and tries to break her down right from the beginning, judging her harshly and comparing her to people he's barely spoken with (if i remember the line i'll gladly put it in, but for now this will have to suffice: Henry basically gives Lucy an overview of the waitress's life(which is pretty messed up) and concludes by telling Lucy: "You're more pathetic than she is" or something of that sort). Forced by their contact at the publishing company to work together, they eventually fall in love with each other blah blah blah. Now here begins the typical Hollywood love-story plot. Guy finds girl (in this case, forced to work with her), realises he loves her, they have a great time, guy loses girl, all seems lost, they get back together, THE FUCKING END. Now, I hope I didn't cause those of you to lose interest in the movie, hell, you might even like the way they formed the plot around to fit the story...or vice versa, whatever. I found it tolerable, probably because Henry was so goddamn fucked up (or dysfunctional, damnit) her seriously needed her because she was his "one in nine-hundred" (don't take that quote literally because that's is just awfully disgusting, if you've seen the film, you'll get it).
Another thing, flash-cuts or flash-transitions, whatever the hell you call it. Annoying at first, still tolerable 'til the end. Kind of fit the film because of Henry's personality.
Henry's encounters with Rudy (the father-figure, first illustrator to "Marty the Beaver") after Rudy's death were necessary, once again, because of Henry being so god-awfully messed up. As the movie progresses, you may sincerely start to feel sorry for the guy and want the movie to end on a good note. I especially love the confrontation between Henry and Lucy at the end of the film, whether he should choose the dedication or the pebble (I'm trying not to give any more away than I already have). He could've offered both, but then that'd be cold and heartless considering that...well...I'll stop there.
Last thing: the music. OH MY GOD the music. Fit the story well, but what was up with that one song being played over the last few scenes of the movie! A little annoying, but didn't ruin the movie for me.
I seriously feel as though my movie reviews are crap because they just turn out to be rants. D:
