when bordom attacks

watch movies, bitches!
actually, yesterday started off with reading The Painted Veil by Maugham. I got to the 7th chapter and decided to do something else.

I watched 3 movies yesterday: "Lust, Caution", "The Other Boleyn Girl", and "Savage Grace"
Many of you may not be familiar with Lust, Caution, and I guess you don't have to be. It wasn't all that great, really. Ang Lee directed the film and it was listed as a Chinese espionage-spy-thriller. Yeah, right. I had read a review in the Sunday L.A. Times a few months back, probably from late last year even, and decided that it might be something to watch. Kids, don't watch the NC-17 version, for reals. For me, it's not like I looked for that version, it was the first one i found. DDD: The film is set during the Japanese invasion/occupation/large influence over almost all of Asia. Some Chinese university students try to kill a pretty high ranking official, who they deem a traitor to China by supporting the Japanese. I'll try to make it short; they try to seduce him with one of the girls, get her to be his mistress, they go do their thing and she slowly finds herself losing it, and later lets him escape from the assasination attempt because she realises how much he actually cares about her, tells him to gtfo, and the students get captured and die. It basically explores the relationship between the official and the university student, but I didn't really like it. I found myself disinterested about halfway through. I'm not too big on emotional films, especially one that explores it with such intensity and such. Wouldn't really recommend it to my friends, although I had a conversation with one of my friends last year about it. They'd probably be traumatized by the, uhh, "stuff."

Movie 2: The Other Boleyn Girl
My best friend says it was pretty good, but for me, not so much. It kind of just felt like experiencing a dysfunctional family, only set in 16th-century England and with some historical backing. I don't really like two close sisters breaking their strong relationship over some guy (as seen in the film). I mean, please, it's just a fucking King for crying out loud. But status mattered back then, so my comment just went down the drain. I found myself more interested in Jim Sturgess and Eddie Redmayne. Their characters were sane, but insane in the fact that they didn't protest too much about what was going on around them. Once again, status mattered back then. What bullshit that is now, eh? I truly felt sorry for the somewhat minor characters (brother George Boleyn[Jim fucking Sturgess!], William Stafford[Mary Boleyn's second husband, played by Eddie fucking Redmayne!], and William Carey[Mary's first husband]) because of the shit they put up with. Think about it, Anne asking her brother George to impregnate her because she's too fucking scared to tell the King she had a miscarriage? And then they both get killed when they didn't even go through with it. Poor George. And William Stafford! Having to watch Mary being whored around with the King. Good thing he got her out of there. Poor William Carey, being forced to give Mary to the King. God, don't get me started on the King. Worst of all, Mrs. Boleyn (the mother, who married a fucking status-whore) lost two of her children in the process of it all, and had her daughters whored around without any consultation at all. I think women not having much say in anything pissed me off a lot, but that was how life was then. If I had to watch it again (which I wouldn't), I'll only watch it for Jim Sturgess and Eddie Redmayne. I love them. XD
I know I sounded biased and sympathetic, but seriously, I wouldn't watch it again. Once was just enough. Just enough. I found myself laughing during the end. I don't know why. It just seemed funny and cliche. Ending the movie the same way it started. They tried to make it all dramatic, but the movie never lived up to it at all.

Movie 3: Savage Grace
Starring Eddie Redmayne (yes, two movies with the same guy) and Julianne Moore. OMG and you thought the Boleyns' were a dysfuntional family. The Baekelands are FUCKED UP. The mother sleeps with everyone, drinks a shitload. The father ends up with his son's ex-girlfriend (if she really was one). And Eddie's character I actually felt sorry for. He had to grow up in such a fucked up environment. I mean, it's cool that he's gay and all (at least he was kissing a cute Spanish guy), but his mother screwed up his brain. It was kinda hard to follow, but that was probably because it was late when I was watching it. Having to move around could screw with any kid. I sincerely felt sorry for him, though. And when he and his mother. Oh God. I was so shocked, I couldn't move. All that was going through my head was, "WTFF!!!" I'd recommend it to anyone who's into crazy stuff. I was probably high yesterday. That's probably why I was watching unsatisfactory movies.

I think I'll watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind again today.
CRAP. I just realised I watched Be Kind Rewind last week. AGH! I'll write that review later today. D: lol, I'll just have a Michel Gondry day today. haha
Have a great day!
